Turn your Doodles into a Career

Lynn Carruthers: Graphic Recording

Can your doodles be a new career?

Lynn Carruthers turned her doodling into a career and she can teach you how you can too.

Now she attends meetings and conferences and draws images on a big piece of paper.   She captures the ideas that are being talked about in words and images.  It’s called Graphic Recording and it’s a powerful tool in communication and shared experience.

I spoke with Lynn recently about what she does and how we can learn to do it too.

You Graphic Record full time?

Yes, I work at Global Business Network in San Francisco. We are a consulting firm that helps companies think about and plan for the future.

Why is graphic recording important?

When participants see their words written in real time they retain more of what they hear.  The display can be quite important and valuable when a group is becoming a group and can see their thoughts and the flow of the conversation.

Lynn tells us what it’s like to be a graphic recorder:

What sort of reaction have you had on a job?

There are some ‘slow starts’, when executives walk into a room and see me standing next to a big piece of paper with markers in my hand ready to draw. But once they see what I do, how I capture what is being said in a creative and clear way, everyone becomes a fan.

You are offering a special 2 day workshop on Graphic Recording, why?

Well, Emily Shepard and I have been pals in the visual practitioner world for many years and were both intrigued at the idea of creating a two day workshop for beginners.

What is the market for graphic recorders?

It is a growing one! Emily is an independent contractor and I am internal staff, and we are both working quite regularly. Which fascinates both of us, in this technologically fast and forward world we are getting more and more work working with paper and markers and chalk.

Where can I find out about upcoming workshops?

At our new snappy webpage -Check it out!  CLICK HERE.

You’ll also see examples from participants.  It’s wild to see how much they improved over the two days.
